THE WORDS FROM ANNESOPHIE BÉRARD, OUR CURATOR :
FINDING ALTERNATIVES
All actions begin with an idea, which is why it is so important to leave a considerable amount of room for imagination and utopias in our societies. The incredible artificial glacier project, witnessed by Slovenian photographer and reporter Ciril Jazbec, is a perfect example.
The retreat of the Himalayan glaciers is causing a shortage of fresh water for communities in the Ladakh region of India who, forced to abandon their valleys, are becoming climate refugees. In 2015, Lakhi engineer Sonam Wangchuk succeeded in prototyping ice stupas: artificial glaciers that store winter meltwater and release it in the spring to cultivate fields. Since then, 50 more ice stupas have been built, irrigating a total of 50 hectares of land. Inspiring, this innovation will not replace the only viable solution according to this engineer: a commitment by nations to reduce emissions.
