THE WORDS FROM ANNESOPHIE BÉRARD, OUR CURATOR :
UNDERSTANDING OUR RESOURCES
The overexploitation of natural resources threatens the balance of ecosystems as much as our own survival. This is evidenced by the day of overshoot, which is constantly receding: it would currently take nearly 1.7 Earths to satisfy our needs. It is urgent to change our relationship with these resources, by developing both awareness actions and a deeper knowledge of their regeneration capacities.
It is this careful observation that inspires us in the work of French artist Léa Barbazanges. These works are explorations of the natural materials that surround us but that we rarely take the time to observe carefully. The work presented here is part of the series Cristaux. Composed of calcite crystals, this work reveals the fascinating graphics created by the orderly arrangement of atoms in a crystal. The organisation of matter at a microscopic level can be seen on our own scale in these designs, which are both geometric and organic, generating an intense reflection of light in silvery flashes. They may remind us of the materiality of hair or feathers, actually they are minerals like water that crystallises in the form of frost.
The Caring Gallery is committed to donating 10% of the sale of this work to the partner association of the exhibition.
