Léa Barbazanges, a Minimalist artist, has been using raw, often natural materials in her practice since the beginning of her career. Her works arouse astonishment and question our view of living matter and art. Crystals, insect wings, algae, are all materials sublimated to create a singular moment of attention that leads the viewer to question the living.
Born in 1985 in Rennes, Léa Barbazanges graduated from the Haute Ecole des arts du Rhin, and was awarded the AWARE prize in 2014.
Her solo exhibition in 2014 at the Xippas gallery marked a turning point in her career. Her work is featured in the contemporary drawing exhibition Drawing Now at the Carreau du Temple during her residency at the Cité internationale des arts de Paris. Her seminal work Cristaux was exhibited at the "Voyage à Nantes", at the Fernet-Branca Foundation, and at the Chaumont-sur-Loire estate. She has been invited to exhibit in heritage sites, with "L'Art dans les chapelles", or at Château Monbazillac. In 2019, she was chosen to create a monumental sculpture
In 2019, she was chosen to create a monumental sculpture as part of the 1% artistic programme for the Rhineland, while in 2021, MicaPenrose was presented outdoors, as part of the official route of the Fête des Lumières in Lyon, in the main courtyard of the Bullukian Foundation. Her artistic horizon is also opening up
Her artistic horizon also opens up to scientific partnerships, she exhibits at the Museum of Natural History in Paris in 2012, works in collaboration with Sylvain Ravy, a researcher at the CNRS, and is the winner of the Diagonale Paris Saclay prize for MicaPenrose, presented at the Nemo biennial at 104 in Paris.
In 2020, she participated in the exhibition "L'oeil de Huysmans, Manet, Degas, Moreau" at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg (MAMCS). The triptych closes the viewer's journey by confronting him with the luminous beauty of the mineral, and is now part of the museum's collections.
The Musée Ziem will publish his monograph on the occasion of his solo exhibition "A la lisière du visible" in 2021-2022.
This year his work will be exhibited at the Domaine de Kerguéhennec (Bignan), at the Sinople gallery (Paris), at the MAMCS (Strasbourg), at the Domaine Pommery (Reims), at the Hospice Comtesse museum as part of Lille3000, "Utopia" (Lille).
